Clinical Services - Diagnostic Assessment

My professional training affords me the scientific skills and credentials to administer and analyse Psychological tests. In my practice, I routinely use two different types of test:

A) Standardised Tests
These tests have been designed scientifically to yield numeric scores, which reflect, in a valid and reliable way, what is being measured. In my practice, I routinely measure:
• Intelligence. Using the WAIS-III or the WISC-IV, and
• Personality. Using the MMPI-2, MMPI-A, and MCMI-III
• Diagnostic. Using the Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scale and the Conners 3

B) Projective Tests
These tests require interpretation based on training. They measure underlying (subconscious) factors, including hidden emotional causes of maladaptive behaviour. In my practice, I routinely use:

• The Thematic Apperception Test
• The Inkblot Test

• The Sachs Sentence Completion Test

Hypnosis

I am a full member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis. In my practice, I use hypnosis for four clinical purposes. These are not mutually exclusive:

  • Relaxation
This is most valuable in cases of anxiety and phobias.

  • Concentration and “Focussing”
This helps students and investigators (scientists, lawyers, police detectives, et al.) to block out extraneous thoughts. These two uses are also very helpful as adjunct treatments for insomnia.

  • Addictions
Smokers and other users of other drugs, including alcohol are often helped to stop using visualization and post-hypnotic suggestion.

  • Psychodynamic recollection
When past trauma is at the root of maladaptive behaviours, hypnosis can often “loosen” previously suppressed or repressed memories. This often leads to “insight” and the ability of the client to deal with emotional issues from their past.
